چکیده

Abstract The present work is part of a wider project aimed at improving the description plasma dynamics during production phase Helicon Plasma Thruster. In particular, was focused on development chemical model for Argon- and Xenon-based plasma. developed consists collisional radiative suitable to describe 1 s 2 p excited levels. meant be complementary 3D-VIRTUS, numerical tool which enforces fluid plasma, by University Padova analyse helicon discharges. Once identified, significant reactions both propellants, reaction rate coefficients, have been integrated exploiting cross sections from literature assuming Maxwellian velocity distribution function all species. These coefficients validated against experimental measurements an Argon Inductively Coupled compared with well-established code. For Argon, selected reduced through proposed lumping methodology. this way, it possible reduce number equations system solve, implement them into 3D-VIRTUS. A validation case taken performed, showing good agreement results. Regarding Xenon model, only verification has performed results another collisional-radiative in literature. Finally, predictive analysis propulsive performances Thruster presented.

Thrust Measurements of a Helicon Plasma Source

There is interest in using a helicon plasma source in propulsive applications as both an ion source and as a thruster. Developing a helicon thruster requires a performance baseline as a basis for future optimization and expansion. The thrust of a helicon is measured using an null-type inverted pendulum thrust stand at a pressure of 2x10 -5 Torr through the operating range of 215-840 W RF power,...

High-beta plasma effects in a low-pressure helicon plasma

In this work, high-beta plasma effects are investigated in a low-pressure helicon plasma source attached to a large volume diffusion chamber. When operating above an input power of 900 W and a magnetic field of 30 G a narrow column of bright blue light due to Ar II radiation is observed along the axis of the diffusion chamber. With this blue mode, the plasma density is axially very uniform in t...

Numerical investigation of a Hall thruster plasma

The dynamics of the Hall thruster is investigated numerically in the framework of a one-dimensional, multifluid macroscopic description of a partially ionized xenon plasma using finite element formulation. The model includes neutral dynamics, inelastic processes, and plasma–wall interaction. Owing to disparate temporal scales, ions and neutrals have been described by set of time-dependent equat...

Device and Plume Model of an Electrothermal Pulsed Plasma Thruster

Progress in combined device/plume modeling is presented for a Teflon-fed, pulsed plasma thruster from plasma generation to the plume far field. In this work we apply a one-dimensional unsteady model for the plasma generation and acceleration process. A new kinetic ablation algorithm is employed to calculate the Teflon ablation rate as a function of plasma parameters. A near cathode sheath model...
